Learn How To Organize Your Attic More Efficiently

Posted on

Organizing an attic can sometimes be quite difficult. If you want to be able to store things in your attack, there are things that you can do to make the most of the space that is available to you. Use the following guide to learn what to do to quickly and easily organize your attack.

Create a Floor

The biggest issue with many attics is that there is no floor in the space. The bottom of the attic has openings between the slats where you could accidentally step when you are trying to store things in the attic. To prevent accidentally falling through the ceiling, lay pieces of plywood on the beams to create a floor. Plywood is a very inexpensive building material that you can get at any home improvement store. Measure the doorway to your attic and have an associate at a lumber shop, such as The Cedar Shop Building Materials, cut the plywood into portions that are small enough to easily fit through the opening that you have available.

Use the Trusses

In the attic, there will be trusses overhead that are used to give the roof strength. These trusses are very durable and strong. Use a hammer to attach a few thick nails to the tresses for storing items off the ground that can be hung. This will free up some of your floor space for bulkier items.

Use Large Plastic Containers

Large plastic containers allow you to easily store like items together so that you can find them when you need them. There are large containers that you can buy at home improvement stores that are waterproof so that you can rest assured your items will not be ruined if the roof leaks. Be sure to label the containers so you can find what you need when you need it.

By organizing your attic, you will be able to make the most of the space that is available to you. You could section off the attic into different areas to ensure that you know where seasonal clothing, holiday decorations, or even family heirlooms are stored. You never want to shove things in the attic without any organization because you will forget what you have and could end up wasting money buying duplicates of items. If you want to really organize your attic, you could create an inventory that you keep on a clipboard hung at the top of the attic stairs. This way you'll always have a record of what is stored in the attic.
